Cutout Sugar Cookies (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

01 - 1/4 teaspoon salt.
02 - 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour.
03 - 3/4 cup sugar (white granulated).
04 - 1 large egg, at room temperature.
05 - 3/4 cup butter (unsalted, soft).
06 - 1/4-1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring (optional).
07 - Sprinkles in various designs.
08 - 1/2 teaspoon powdered leavening (baking powder).
09 - Royal icing or a sugar glaze.
10 - 2 teaspoons pure vanilla.

# Instructions:

01 - In a medium-sized bowl, stir together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
02 - Use your mixer to beat the sugar and butter together until the mix is smooth and fluffy—takes about 2 minutes.
03 - Mix in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract (if using), and keep beating until everything blends well.
04 - Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet one with your mixer on low speed until combined.
05 - Split dough into 2 parts, then roll both to a thickness of roughly a quarter-inch.
06 - Layer the dough between sheets of baking paper and leave it in the fridge for 1–2 hours to cool.
07 - Set your oven to 180°C and get your baking trays ready with parchment paper.
08 - Cut shapes out of the chilled dough and set them 8cm apart on your already-prepped trays.
09 - Pop them in the oven for 11–12 minutes until the edges are just starting to turn golden brown.
10 - Let the cookies sit on the tray for 5 minutes, then move them over to a rack to cool completely.
11 - Deck out the cooled cookies with icing and your favorite sprinkles as you like.
