Baked Red Churros (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Churros

01 - ½ teaspoon salt
02 - ⅓ cup low-fat butter
03 - 1 large room-temperature egg
04 - 1 cup water
05 - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
06 - 1 cup plain flour
07 - ¼ cup brown sugar
08 - 2 teaspoons red food dye or 1 tablespoon beet juice
09 - 2 tablespoons olive oil
10 - 2 teaspoons cocoa powder (unsweetened)

→ Coating

11 - ¼ cup superfine sugar

→ Serving

12 - Melted Nutella or chocolate to dip

# Instructions:

01 - Crank the oven to 390°F and cover a baking tray with parchment.
02 - Mix the flour with cocoa in a bowl.
03 - Heat the butter with oil, water, sugar, salt, and food dye. Let it bubble for 5 minutes. Stir this into the flour mix.
04 - Let it sit for 10 minutes to cool. Stir in the egg and vanilla until blended.
05 - Squeeze out 4-inch sections onto the tray. Bake at 390°F for 10 minutes, then lower to 350°F for another 7-10 minutes.
06 - Roll the warm churros in the sugar. Dip in chocolate and enjoy!

01 - Double piping bags or cookie presses work well.
02 - Swap out food coloring for beet juice if you prefer.
